The only way to avoid blood vessels or nerve damage, is the strict control of glucose in the blood.

I was a Type 1 diabetic for 16 years (now 24 Clock) and have the perfect eye sight. Most damage is visible from the first ten years. Make sure your eyes every 6 months to control the amount of BSL and make sure nothing that could be difficult for them to do. Wear glasses, if necessary and make sure the eye is always well lubricated that diabetics who are prone to dry eyes lead to scratches on the lens.
